September 8, 2025 - September 19, 2025 Days of Week: Monday - Sunday Time: 08:00 AM-04:00 PM Maximum Number of Students per Time Frame: 12 Location: Mount Sinai Hospital Elective Director: Adam Hill, MD hilla@nychhc.org Coordinator: Adam Hill, MD hilla@nychhc.org Elective Description: This is a 2-week, full-time elective that pairs web-based education with in-field, hands-on training covering the fundamentals of wilderness medicine and outdoor skills. During the first week (Monday to Friday), students will have self-directed learning requiring them to watch on-line videos, read articles, and complete daily quizzes. This will be supplemented by 1-2 in-person/video educational sessions during the week. The second week (Saturday to Friday) will be field training located in the Delaware Water Gap. Students will camp and backpack along the Appalachian Trail while faculty and residents from the Mount Sinai system lead lectures, small group discussions, and practical scenarios. Students are expected to actively participate in all portions of the course. There is a participation fee of $225 to cover food, supplies, transportation, and outdoor fees. Students are encouraged, but not required, to purchase their own travel insurance prior to the trip. Students must be aware that they will be hiking moderate terrain, sleeping in tents, cooking, treating water, and backpacking with a heavy load. Students will be required to provide their own personal gear (e.g. sleeping bag, backpack). Tents, cooking supplies, water treatment systems, food, and transportation to and from the field will be provided. Students will be required to complete a course waiver and obtain medical clearance prior to the outdoor portion. Upon requesting an elective, the department will review and approve or deny registration within 3 business days.
