Elective Description:
The goal of this elective is to provide exposure to and a foundation for emergency medical care. The Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) at Mount Sinai Morningside/Mount Sinai West supports an EM residency with 20 residents at each level, PGY 1-3, with whom the students interact extensively. Students are assigned to an attending at each shift who provides one-on-one supervision and teaching. Mount Sinai Morningside is a Level 1 Trauma Center located across the street from Columbia University and Mount Sinai West is a tertiary care hospital located in Midtown Manhattan. The two sites serve Manhattan's Upper West Side and together the emergency care experience encompasses the breadth of the field. 12 shifts (ranging from 8-10 hours) are required, which include 2 weekend shifts, 2 overnight shifts, and a pediatric EM shift.
Students are required to attend the EM Residency's weekly conference each Wednesday in addition to a series of didactic experiences that include an EMS ride-along, simulation, ultrasound experience, and other student-oriented lectures. A "Directors Rounds" is held at the end of the rotation where each student gives a brief case presentation based on an interesting patient seen in the ED. Orientation is at 10 a.m. on the first weekday of the academic block in the EM Departmental offices at 250 W57th Street, 15th floor, main conference room. Orientation includes information regarding rotation logistics, expectations and introductory didactics. Students must come with their school ID and appropriate working attire if they are assigned to a shift right after orientation.
Visiting students must apply through VSLO. We typically notify students of acceptance to the rotation in late April or early May. Please contact slredmedstuds@gmail.com with any questions.
